Dear Parents and Guardians,
Can you believe we are less than a week away from our last day of school! This year FLEW by! We were very busy bee’s this week! In math, we wrapped up our length and measurement unit! We completed a review packet that helped us practice and study for our test. Then, we took our last math test of the year! Lastly, we began our end of the year section of our workbook that prepares us for third grade! In writing this week, we focused on how to create simile poems. We took what we learned from our feeling poems, people, place, and thing poems, lesson on line breaks, and began creating rough drafts for these poems! We began by brainstorming a list of ideas, then wrote rough drafts, checked and edited them with me, and then created final copies of them! Next, we learned about repetition and how to add repeating lines into our poems as well. Lastly, we wrote all about our week (for the last time) in our June Nothing Books. In our Superkids Word Work Books, we read a Superkids Story, and answered comprehension questions about the story. We also learned how “er” can sound the same, but can be spelled different ways. For example, “ir, ur, ar, or, ear.” Lastly, we learned about proverbs, which are sayings that give advice in a clever way. In reading, we continued our unit on Fairy Tales, Folktales, and Fables. This week we read Little Red Riding Hood. Then, we read the “twist” to it called Honestly, Little Red Riding Hood Was Rotten. We then used our KWL Chart from last week to identify if it was a fairytale, folktale, or Fable, why, and what elements compared or contrasted from the original story. Next, we read The Boy Who Cried Wolf, and again, used our KWL Chart from last week to identify if it was a fairytale, folktale, or Fable, why, as well as the story elements. Then, we read the “twist” which was The Wolf Who Cried Boy and compared and contrasted it to the original story. In spelling, we continued to practice our spelling words with our spelling activities. Then, we took our spelling test! In religion, students learned about the biblical stories of Repairing the Temple, Hezekiah Consults Isaiah, The Potter and the Clay, and Habakkuk’s Questions. In our second grade religion books, we finished all of our chapters. We are now at the point in the year where we focus on the liturgical calendar, and focus on those specific holy days. This week we focused on: Lent, Holy Week, and Easter. In science, Doug answered “Where does salt come from?” We also continued our unit on Investigating Birds! In social studies we continued to learn about Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month! This week we learned more about how it became a month-long holiday, and also about Queen Liliuokalani and Tammy Duckworth.

Dear Parents and Guardians,
We had a GREAT week in second grade, accomplishing so much, and taking full advantage of the beautiful weather! In math this week, we moved on to the second part of our unit which is geometry! Students learned about dimensional triangles, parallelograms, polygons, pentagons, and hexagons. We also learned how to classify each shape by the number of sides, vertices, and angles it has. Next, students took a deeper look at polygons and their specific angles. We then created a Shape Book that would allow students to reference these specific polygons to help them memorize the polygon's sides, angles, and vertices. Lastly, students actually learned how to draw these two-dimensional shapes. In writing, we continued with our poetry unit! This week we really focused on our feeling/ emotion poems. If students did not finish brainstorming a list of emotions or feelings they felt they could describe or illustrate in a poem, they had time to continue to do so. Then, students used concrete details to help them to describe their emotion or feeling they picked for their poem. For example, a line for a poem about feeling happy may say something along the lines of “happy like eating a big slice of chocolate cake.” Lastly, students wrote about their week in their Nothing Books. In our Superkids Phonics Book, we talked about different ways to represent the long “o” sound. For example, ui, ou, oo, ew,ue, and super e which belongs at the end of a word. In addition, we talked about the suffix “able,” what it means, and when to use it. Lastly, we read and answered comprehension questions about a Superkids Story. In reading, we continued our unit on Fairy Tales, Folktales, and Fables. This week, we finished the “twist” on the story of The Gingerbread Man, and read The Gingerbread Cowboy. We then used our KWL Chart from last week to identify if it was a fairytale, folktale, or Fable, why, and what elements compared or contrasted from the original story. Next, we read The Three Little Pigs, and again, used our KWL Chart from last week to identify if it was a fairytale, folktale, or Fable, why, as well as the story elements. Then, we read the “twist” which was The Three Super Pigs and compared and contrasted it to the original story. Lastly, we read an article about a dinosaur called a Pteranodon, and answered comprehension questions about what we read. In spelling, we continued to practice our spelling words with our spelling activities. Then, we took our spelling test! In religion, students learned about the biblical stories of Daniel in the Lion’s Den and Nehemiah’s Story. In our second grade religion books, we finished all of our chapters. We are now at the point in the year where we focus on the liturgical calendar, and focus on those specific holy days. This week we focused on: Feast of All Saints, Advent, and Christmas. In science, Doug answered “How was the skateboard invented?” We also continued our new unit on Exploring Light and Sound! This week we conducted two pitch experiments to show how changing the length and tightness of rubber bands around an empty tissue box, would change the pitch in the sound when strummed. In social studies, we continued our unit on map skills! This week we continued learning about cardinal directions and intermediate directions. On a map, we located where different states were located in relation to one another.
