Week of September 30th
*Focus Letters - Kk, Ll, Mm, Nn, Oo What sounds do these letters make? What words start with these letters? Please practice writing these upper and lower case letters. Remember to start at the top!
*Focus Numbers - 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 Please practice writing the numbers in order, as well as count and show how many.
*What does a scientist do? (They ask questions, observe or look at, test and record or write down what they see)
*Are racoons loners or social animals? (loners - they work and hunt for food alone)
*What sound do you hear at the beginning of Oswald? (the letter o and the short sound o /o/)
*What are some of the odd animals that Oswald like to learn about? (ostrich, octopus, ox, ocelot, otter) We are learning about these animals. What facts do you know about these animals? Can you share what you know with your parents?
*Do you think Oswald is a scientist? Why or why not?
*Would you like to be a scientist? Why or why not?
*Did St. Francis of Assisi live a long time ago? (yes)
*Who did St. Francis love with all of his heart? (God - and all the animals that God created. He also loved nature.)
*St. Francis loved being out with nature because it reminded him of God, animals, and all of God's creations. Do you think that nature and animals are beautiful too? Do they remind you of God's love for us?
*St. Francis loved everything that God made.
*Why is St. Francis so special to our Friars - Fr. Michael, Fr. Martin, and Fr. Raymond? (St. Francis is special because he is the one that started their order of Priests/Friars. They are followers of St. Francis, God, Jesus, and Mary)
*We made apple pie in a cup. Did you like the taste of our special snack? What was the order/sequence of the ingredients that we used? (graham crackers, apple pie filling, whipped cream, and cinnamon) -

*What number shows nothing, nip, zilch? (zero) *Why is it so important to remember to write the number 0 when needed? Example - 1 and 10 How does the zero do its job? Why is the zero needed?
*Please share your Let's Find Out booklet with your family. What did we learn about Johnny Appleseed? (Johnny Appleseed loved being with nature, he walked from town to town and planted apple seeds where ever he went, he did not like to wear shoes so he was usually barefoot, he loved to sleep under the stars surrounded by nature and animals, he planted the first apple orchards)
*We are learning to read and find out information from graphs. We are doing a great job reading the graphs and answering questions about the information.
*We finished up our first Superkid book - Cass. Please keep all of the books. Review the skills learned with your child.
*Who is our next Superkid? (Oswald) What does Oswald like to do? What does he like to learn about? (all different kinds of animals, especially odd animals) What are some of the odd animals that Oswald learns about? (ox, otters, ostriches, ocelots,....)
*Oswald is teaching us about the letter Oo and the sound that you hear at the beginning of Oswald - the short o /o/ sound. Can you think of some words that start with the letter Oo and the /o/ sound? (otter, odd, October, octopus, ocelot,...)

Week of September 16th
*Focus Letters - Ff, Gg, Hh, Ii, - Please help your child review the letter-sound correspondence for these letters, identification of these letters, and practice writing both the upper and lower case letters.
*Focus Numbers - 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7
*On Monday we had a school wide pep rally with "Red Rooster" to kick off our 2nd annual SPS Fun Run. We had lots of fun.
*We enjoyed painting in art class with Ms. Lindsay. We did part one of our craft on Monday and we will finish it next week.
*We read the book Our Class is a Family by Shannon Olsen. We learned that family isn't always just your relatives. It is the ones who accept us for who we are. The ones who would do anything to see you smile and those who care for us. We talked about how our classmates and teachers are a special group who love and care for us and who we spend lots of time with - laughing, learning, playing together, eating together, and helping each other out.
*We continue to learn about our first Superkid, Cass. Please review the letter-sound correspondence for the hard letter Cc /k/ like you hear in the beginning of the words - cat, cap, carton, can, cookies,.....
*We are learning unique hand motions for each letter of the alphabet. This provides some hands on, kinesthetic reinforcement of letters and their sounds. We "act out" the motions regularly so that if a child seems to forgot it, doing the motions can jog their memory. *We are identifying and reinforcing the position words - top, middle, bottom. This will help us learn about our "ice cream lines" that are used for our handwriting practice in our Superkids' program.

Week of September 9th
*Focus Letters - Dd, Ee, Aa, Bb, Cc
*Focus Numbers - 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
*We are doing a fantastic job learning and following the rules and routines of our classroom.
*We celebrated our Mother Mary's birthday (September 8th) on Monday. We learn about Mary and her love for us, and her love for her son Jesus.*We are getting lots of practice hearing, recognizing, and manipulating sounds in spoken words. Please practice these skills at home too. The more that your child practices, the easier it will be for them to blend the sounds together and read words and sentences!
*We practiced using scissors, discussed how we only cut paper, and learned how to use them safely.
*Please practice the letter Cc with your child. Cc is for our Superkid Cass. We are focusing on the hard Cc /k/ sound that you hear at the beginning of the words - cat, corn can, car,.... Help your child identify the letter, write the letter, and come up with words that start with the letter Cc.
*In art, we made a really cool crayon craft that will be showcased at the Berlin Fair. Please stop by at the arts and crafts building to see our amazing work! SPS has lots of artists represented at the Berlin Fair. -
Week of September 2nd
*Focus Letters - Aa, Bb, Cc - Please help your child practice identifying and writing these letters. Focus on the sounds that the letter make and have your child think of some words that start with these letters.
*Focus Numbers - 1, 2, 3 - Please practice writing these numbers and show how many.
*Share your Let's Find Out booklet with your parents. Why is it important to listen in school? (to stay safe, learn new things, be a good friend, be kind to others,...)
*Who is our first Superkid? (Cass) *What does Cass like to do? (cook yummy treats with her cat, Coconut) *We are learning about the hard Cc sound c/k/. What are some words that start with Cass' sound? (cat, carrot, corn, candy, can,.....)
*We enjoyed going to Library, STEM, Music, and Gym.
