How Our First Grade Class Shows Love Video

    End of the Year Calendar
    ABC Countdown List

    April 23, 2016

    Dear Families,

We had such a fun day in first grade.  High Touch High Tech came to visit for a in class field trip to teach us about sound.  We learned about how sound can have a high or low pitch as well as vibrate very quickly or very slowly.  We participated in several experiments to understand how sound waves are made and move.  See some of the photos below.  In Religion we are continuing our Video project on how we spread our love to others.  During Reading, we read the story "Rex King's Visit" and are working on going back into the story to answer questions about the text.  We also worked understanding Cause and Effect.  We will take a Superkids test on Wednesday and Thursday of this week.  During Writing, this week we will continue to work on our ‘How To’ writing unit.  Exploring the difference in writing steps in bullet form vs. paragraphs in narrative writing.  We are finishing up our unit on Measurement as we have used our feet, cubes, paper clips, straws and pencils to measure and compare things all over our classroom.  Our class loved the hands-on learning during this unit!  This week we will work on American Monuments during Social Studies.  We will look at statues around the United States that have meaning to our Country.

We were so excited to finally see a sign of spring today outside at recess!  We hope the rest of the week will be as nice as today and maybe we can bring some of our learning outside underneath the pavilion on the school green!

    April 16, 2018

    Dear Families,

Welcome back from Spring Break!  I hope you are all rested and ready for finish out the year strong!   I was so happy to be back in the classroom with our first graders today!  We had so much fun getting back into our curriculum.  We talked about how we can show our love to others today in Religion.  This week we will be working on a video project, talking about how we can show our love to God.  Once the video is complete we will upload it to the website for everyone to see!  In Science we are finishing our unit about Earth and Space - Sunlight, water and soil.  We are talking about how humans use water and how we need to conserve water.  This will bring us into talking about Earth Day which is April 22nd.  During Reading we are working on the -aw and -all word patterns.  Today we learned -aw says AW Shucks! and the -all says All Right!  We are also working with our new pattern words our, put, they, come and coming.  During math we are working with measuring length.  We learned that estimating means to make a good guess and measuring means to find the length.  We will be using indirect measuring during this unit mostly measuring with cubes and paper clips.  In writing, we are writing about our Spring Vacation and then we will continue to work on how to writing.  How to writing consists of a list of materials and then a list of steps to give directions how to do something.  It could be a recipe, directions to play a game, do a trick or complete an experiment.

Today I sent home a lot of information to inform you of things that will be happening now until the end of the school year.  Starting next Thursday, one student a day will bring in a picture book of his or her choice to read to the class.  This will count as an oral language grade and will allow the student to show off his/her reading ability.  It also included the ABC countdown to the last days of school!  This is a fun way to end the year and get them ready for second grade.  I know it is scary to think the end of the year is approaching.  We still have lots of work to do, but we will also be having lots of fun!

If you have any questions, comments or concerns please feel free to contact me!

    Dear Families,

I hope you all enjoyed your Easter Weekend!  I cannot beleive that the week is almost over already.  We have been busy getting ready for Spring Vacation next week!  Those who came to Lego club on Tuesday had lots of fun using their imaginations creating and designing with the Legos!  I was very impressed!  This week we are working on comprehension as well as synonyms and antonyms.  In math we are workin on comparing and measuring length using indirect measurments such as string, our feet and other objecs.  During Religion we continued to talk about Holy Week and the Easter Season.  Today we talked about the Good Samaritan and how we can become Good Samaritan's.  During Science we are talking about Water and where we can find it in the world.  We are also doing an experiment to see how it changed from water into ice.

    God Bless,
    Miss Coombs

    Dear Families,

I cannot believe we are in our third and final semester of first grade.  I have loved our journey so far this year and cannot wait to see what the next few months have in store.  These next months are a huge growing time for our first graders.  They should gain more independence.  Our curriculum begins to get harder as they are ready to use more problem solving skills.  In Superkids, our units go at a faster pace, therefore spelling tests will be every week or week and a half.  Our students have also built a foundation of reading with automatic decoding and fluency.  We now will focus more towards the comprehension component.  In writing, we are finishing up our letter writing unit and will move into writing 'how to' stories.  We will make lists of materials and include steps to show someone how to do something.  During math we began working on regrouping with two-digit addition problems.  In our next Topic we will learn how to subtract two-digit numbers.  Students need to continue to practice math fact skills as it is essential to build on for further math skills.  During Science we are going to begin exploring sunlight, water and soil.  In Social Studies we will continue to work on life skills and understanding how our community works, and our job as citizens.  In Religion we will continue to get ready for the Easter season as well as talk about how Jesus is good.

If you have any questions, comments or concerns please feel free to let me know!

    Dear Families,

We have been busy little first graders these past few weeks.  We have been learning and making so much progress!  Our fluency in reading is progressing as well as our math fact fluency!  We continue to work on these skills everyday as well as our comprehension and application of math skills into the real world.  At the end of last week, we learned about Dr. Seuss and played lots of fun games involving rhyming and counting.  This week we are finishing the first half of our Superkids program reviewing all of the concepts we have learned so far this year.  In math, we are working on adding groups of ten to two-digit numbers.  In Religion, we are talking about how Jesus showed his love through spreading the Good News and performing miracles.  We will also be talking about the stations of the cross and Holy Week as we come closer to Easter.  First grade and Seventh grade will be putting on a prayer service in the gym on March 14th.  In science, we are finishing up our unit on Trees learning the life cycle of the tree as well as how to tell how old a tree is.  During Social Studies, we have been learning about who is in charge of our community and what we can do to be responsible.  We have been working on writing letters including the 5 parts during writing.  The parts are the date, greeting, body, closing and signature.    Every single first grader has been making so excellent progress and I am so proud of all of them!

    Dear Parents,
Happy Valentine’s Day!  Our first graders did a fantastic job today at mass!  Everyone was blown away by how well they read!  Thank you for all of your support to help practice the reading to ensure that they were ready for mass!  We celebrated this afternoon with a Valentine’s day party sharing our love towards one another.  This is such a loving and caring class!  I truly love spending my days with all of them!

We have been very busy this week getting ready for president’s weekend!  We talked about the past and present presidents.  We also thought about what we would do if we became president!  We began talking about 1 more, 1 less, 10 more, 10 less in math.  We also continued talking about team vowel words.  When two vowels are next to each other in a word, the first vowel is long and the second is silent.  We continue to work on fluency while reading as well as answering questions after we read to improve our understanding.  During Religion, we are reviewing for our Unit 2 test tomorrow.  We have also talked about Ash Wednesday and the beginning of lent.  In writing, we began talking about writing letters.  Letters have an introduction, paragraph and closer.

    Dear Families,

We had a fantastic week here in first grade celebrating Catholic Schools week.  Monday was kicked off by a pep rally.  Tuesday, we played Pokemon go and Trivia. We finished our care packages for the Nursing Home.  I am sure they will be very grateful of the kind gesture from our families. Wednesday, we were surrounded by so many loving grandparents and special friends.  Thursday, we loved sharing what we were learning with our parents and playing relay races.  Our class had some really close races!  Today we finished by reading with our mass buddies and watching a movie.   It was a great way to begin the Month of February.  February will be filled with fun activities and lots of learning.  Next week we will celebrate the 100th day of school.  As long as there are no more snow days, the 100th day is scheduled to be Thursday February 8th.  Today we talked about Groundhogs day.  The groundhog saw his shadow which means there will be 6 more weeks of winter.

    Dear Families,

We had an excellent week working hard and getting prepared for Christmas.  We celebrated our first week of advent preparing by doing good deeds around the school.  We worked on our math facts, memory words and pattern words.  We also learned about fact vs fiction in Social Studies.  We talked about how when we read we can read stories based off of true events (facts) and then we can also read stories that are made up (fiction).  In writing we began talking about writing our opinions.  Everyone has their own opinion, you need to respect other opinions.   It is okay to disagree with someone else’s opinion and for you to have your own.  In superkids we talked about adding ed and ing to the end of the word.  We also worked on our comprehension skills, reading to understand not only to read the words on a page.  In math, we worked on creating 10 to add and adding three numbers together.

Our class enjoyed shopping for our family and friends at the Christmas Shopping Fair!  We also decorated a tree in our classroom and hung Christmas stockings!

I hope you all enjoyed the snow this weekend and stayed safe and warm!  I cannot wait to see what this week has to bring with our little first graders!

    God Bless,

    November 10, 2016

    Dear Families,

Our first graders are working hard.  We accomplished a lot this week.  We also had the excitement of using the Chromebooks to try out our new educational programs to enhance our learning.  Our students are learning to log in on their own and the proper way to handle the computers.  We want to make sure we are teaching our students proper digital citizenship.

In reading we are working on -er and -ed endings.  -ed has three different sounds /t/, /d/, /ed/.  We are working on hearing the words and deciding which ending sound the word has, as well as hearing words and being able to spell them with the proper endings, and reading them correctly.  We are also working on our comprehension and comparing and contrasting stories.  During math, we are working on strengthening our fast math skills for both addition and subtraction.  Students should automatically know doubles facts and should be able to use the doubles facts to also solve near double facts.  We also want our students to know all the facts that add to ten.  We worked on counting on, putting the larger number in our head and counting on.   During Religion, we talked about the Sacrament of Baptism and how we are born at birth and again at Baptism.  We become Christians, and we receive God's life when we are Baptized.  During Social Studies, we talked about Veterans Day and what we can do to honor veterans.  For Writing, we are beginning to write a book across several pages.  We have been brainstorming ways and we will write a class book before students write a book on their own!

Please make sure that your students are bringing their jackets to school every day as it gets colder.  Please also check the school handbook to make sure that your children are wearing the proper winter uniforms.  Students should not be wearing shorts or sneakers as part of their winter uniforms.

Any questions comments or concerns please feel free to let me know!

    Dear Families,

We had a wonderful day today in Frist grade.  We worked hard and got a lot done.  This week in Religion we will be learning about the sacrament of Baptism.  For homework, your child is to learn more about their own baptism if they have been baptized.  If not they are asked to look at the symbols that are important during a baptismal ceremony.  In Writing we are beginning to write a story using more than one page.  In Reading we will take our Unit 3 spelling test tomorrow and we will begin Unit 4 learning about the -er and -ed endings in words.  During Math, we are learning about doubles, near doubles and making 10 to strengthen our math facts.  These are all facts your children should know within seconds.  During Science, we are finishing our unit about habitats.  In Social Studies, we will talk more about the Past, present and future as well as talk about veteran’s day.

We have a funfilled week ahead.

    Dear Families,

We have a busy full week of school this week!  We will be finishing Unit 2 in Superkids and take our end of unit 1 and 2 test.  I do not have the students study for this test as we review in the classroom and I use it to help see where your student may need extra help or where they are succeeding.  If there is an area of concern, I will let you know.  In math we are working on ten-frames.  In writing we are beginning to write and answer questions.  We will ask others questions, read stories to help answer questions and use data to answer questions.  In religion we are learning about Holy things in the church and what we can do to be reverent.  Father Tim will be giving up a tour of the church at some point this week.  We will also begin writing our scripts for the Saints Celebration.  Once the scripts are written I will make a copy to send home for your child to practice reading at home.  In social studies we are learning about time.  We are learning that time can be the past, present and future.  It could be the month or the day on the calendar, or the time on the clock.  In science we are reviewing the stages of life and beginning to learn about our habitat, the place that we live.  Just a reminder that tomorrow students must wear their dress uniforms for class pictures.  Please also remember to sign up for conferences next week.  You can find the link above on this page.  If you are unable to meet at any of the times provided please let me know as I would be happy to find a time that works best for you!

Any questions, comments or concerns please feel free to let me know!

    Dear Families,

We have been busy here in first grade.  We have continued talking about our Saints play that will take place on November 1st at 2:30 in the gym.  This week for homework students are asked to complete research about their selected saint that is age appropriate.  You can look online, watch movies or go to the library to find a book.  We will be using this fact sheet to create our script for the play.  In Reading we have finished our first unit in Adventures of the Superkids working with sh, ch and tch.  Please continue to engage your students to sound out and spell words with these patterns.  We will begin working with question words in unit 2 such as what, why, where and who.  We will also work with th pattern words.  In writing we are working on our first draft of our small moment writing.  We will begin to edit our writing before writing our final drafts by the end of the week.  In math we are continuing to work with subtraction sentences.  We are learning that we can write multiple addition and subtraction number sentences for each part part whole mat.  Last week, in social studies we talked about being a good citizen and this week we will be talking about Fire Safety.  In science we will continue talking about the life stages of adolescent and adult.  Please remember that homework should only take 10-15 minutes a night per subject assigned.  If it is taking additional time please stop your child and send in a note.

Any questions, comments or concerns please feel free to contact me!

    Dear Families,

We had a busy day today getting back to work.  I hope you all enjoyed your long weekend and had fun at the Berlin Fair!  Today we worked on writing lists of our favorite foods.  We continued to talk about how God is good for creating our world for us.  In Superkids, we talked about if a word has an 's' at the end it is talking about more than one (plural).  In math, we worked on using objects to solve problem.  In Science, we are talking about characteristics of infants and toddlers.

I cannot wait to see what the rest of the week will bring!
    Thank you,

    Dear Families,

Wow, we are already halfway through the week.  We have been working hard and continuing to learn procedures in the classroom.  Today we started our small guided reading groups along with working with centers.  In Religion we are learning about the creation story.  In math we are working on understanding number sentences, P+P=W (part + part = whole).  During social studies we are working on learning where we live on the map.  This week in science we will learn abou the life cycle.

I hope to see all of you tomorrow evening at the State of the School at 7pm in the gym!
    God Bless,

    Dear Families,
We have had a busy few days in first grade!  We are continuing to work on our classroom routines as we begin our curriculum.  We want to continue to remind our first graders about appropriate lunch time manners; Sitting in our seats, chewing with our mouths closed and picking up our garbage when we are done.  During Religion we have continued talking about Jesus as our friend.  We practiced making the sign of the cross as well as learning that Jesus died on the cross to show his love for us.  In writing we began to write our hopes and dreams for first grade.  During reading we are working on sorting beginning sounds words and that the ck say /k/.  This week we are learning the procedures for our centers so we can begin to work in guided reading groups.  In math we began our first unit working on addition.  We are teaching students how to put the bigger number in their head and count on.  We want to steer them away from counting all the objects and identify patterns.  In social studies we are learning about the Pledge of Allegiance and the importance of Labor Day.

Don't forget our All About Me posters are due on Friday!
Any questions please feel free to email me! e.coombs@stpaulkensington.org

    Dear Families,

I cannot believe our first few days of first grade are already behind us.  We have worked hard and learned many rules and routienes in first grade.  We are learning to walk quietly in the hallways, follow directions, raise our hands, be nice to others and use our manners.  These are skills that we will work on all year long. In superkids we worked on sorting words by their beginning sounds.  In math we practiced writing our numbers and talked about which is less.   Today I sent home your childs All About Poster.  This can be decorated in any way you would like.  It is due next Friday, September 8th.  We will share the posters and then place them above the lockers for the duration of the school year.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.
    Thank you,
    Miss Coombs

    Dear Parents,

Today was another fabulous day in First Grade!   We started our day by talking about Jesus being our friend.  We then talked about the Superkids, trying to remember what they all liked.  Please fill out the Superkids online paper that I sent in your child's take home folder today.  This will allow access to online material at home such as games and books to read.  In math we worked on graphing our emoji's.  We also talked about our classroom rules.

    Have a wonderful evening,
    Miss Coombs

    Dear Parents,

We had a fantastic first day!  We began our day organizing our new materials.  We learned about our morning routines and our Morning Meeting.  We went on a scavenger hunt to find things around the room and new information about our friends.  We read First Day Jitters, My New Teacher and Me and Amelia Bedelia's First Day of School.  We talked about how we felt coming to school today and drew our first day selfies.  I am excited to see what tomorrow will bring!

    Enjoy your evening,

    Dear Parents,

As I am saddened to see my first class at Saint Paul School leave and move to second grade, I am excited to welcome the incoming first graders to my classroom.  Our year will be filled with learning, excitement and cherished memories.  Our classroom fosters a positive learning environment where students are encouraged to take learning risks. The children will be able to feel comfortable and invited, knowing that they can be themselves and make educational mistakes freely. My goal is to inspire, encourage, and engage each and every student in the learning process. I can’t wait to have you join me for an unforgettable learning journey.

To best prepare your child for first grade, I am asking that each child read daily for 15-20 minutes. I know this will benefit your child and keep their brain active for 1st grade. To get ready for Envision Math it’s never to early to practice adding and subtracting.  Below is a summer packet with short activities to help your child prepare.  There is also a Adventure Journal attached.  Your child may write or you may ask your child what they want to write and you can scribe it for them.

Enjoy your summer, and keep those brains active!

If you have any questions, comments or concerns please feel free to contact me at any time!
